Having grown in a society that has made us to think that marriage is a license to sex and that a marriage becomes full only when the couple have a child, there is very less awareness about infertility among us! When a couple have not conceived a child within one or two years of the marriage, the girl's relatives, especially her in-laws, make life living hell for her by asking her numerous uncomfortable questions and make her undergo so many invasive tests and procedures while it does not occur to even the most educated people that the problem could be with the boy too! this is the result of a society that is predominantly male chauvinistic where even many women believe that a man can never go wrong and there can be nothing wrong with a boy physiologically!
Millions of couples world over are faced with the problem of infertility either with one or both in a couple being infertile! Though the filed of medicine has advanced so much that even 55 year old women can give birth, artificial insemination, sperm donation, in-vitro fertilization, surrogacy are all still tabooed in India!
Shoojit Sircar, the Director of Vicky Donor deserves a standing ovation and a loud applause from the whole of India for choosing to make a sensible, sensitive yet light-hearted and fun-filled movie based on this serious issue!
The movie does not preach sperm donation in even a single frame, there are no double innuendos for the reproductive organs or sperm, no sick jokes, no disgusting humor and no dirty scenes! The director deserves the pat on the back for having made the movie so clean!
Many Bollywood directors have long since acquired the guts to make movies without duets and party songs and utilize music only to make the movie forward and Shoojit is not left behind! Sadly, the directors have a really long way to go before they could get the guts to switch to this healthy trend! the few songs and the background score of the movie is really moving!
When i first watched Ayushmaan in IPL's Extraa innings, i told myself that this handsome dude would go places someday and man, i'm happy that i was right about him! Ayushmaan is simply BRILLIANT as Vicky Arora and he sure has a great future waiting for him!
Yami Gautam as the Bong girl Ashima is nothing but scintillating! It's been quite sometime since bollywood saw such a refreshing mix of beauty, sensuality and talent! Yami is sure a breath-taker!
But the actors who really steal the show are Annu Kapoor as Dr.Chaddha, Dolly as Vicky's mother and the modern grandma! They're like a breath of fresh air in the movie and are so natural in their performances!
Those who had watched TV serials in DD Metro would vividly remember Annu and his antics!Man, he's one helluva performer!
John Abraham really needs to be appreciated for choosing such a bold subject for his maiden production venture!
I really wanted to catch this one in the big screen! Well, i havent been lucky enough! But it was nothing short of rejoicing to watch it alone on my computer!
Vicky Donor does not intend to give sermons about sperm donation, or preach about infertility or make fun of reproductively challenged couples or promote adoption! But, i'm sure it'd make people's minds if not fully at least a little more open to all this!
The arrival of a kid can bring so much happiness into the lives of a couple and if you can give that happiness to someone, then it cannot be wrong or disgusting right?! Well, that's the bottomline of VICKY DONOR!
